You’re driving at night – over unfamiliar roads – searching for a safe place to capture an aurora. Then you wait hours – usually in the freezing cold – hoping that an aurora will appear.

While your partner and maybe the kids, are sitting bored in the car – or back at the motel waiting for you to return.

We’ve all been there – but it doesn’t have to be like that.

The Night Sky Lounge

The Night Sky Lounge is in a bus. It’s a secure, private place where you can photograph auroras and the night sky. You’ll be safe, warm, and be able to enjoy many creature comforts including:

A wood heater – with plenty of wood
Camera mounts and window openings
Fridge for your drinks and food (B.Y.O.)
Electric jug, induction hotplate
Seats and table
Weber barbecue
Toilet and bathroom facilities in separate building

The View

We are located on a secluded 50 acre property about 30km North of Hobart, an easy 30 minute drive along the highway from Hobart

The view looking South towards the Wellington Range. Auroras generally appear between Mt. Wellington and Mt. Dromedary, the higher points on the horizon.

Spectacular shots of the Milky Way can also be taken looking in this direction between April and October.

Accommodation

We do not provide accommodation as such.
But there are a variety of options including your own camper van, tent, etc.
There is space in the bus for your airbed and sleeping bag if you need a nap.
(Or for your kids to have a nap while you are watching auroras)

Facilities

There is a cottage close to the Night Sky Lounge with a toilet and hand basin.

And lots of bush tracks to explore and watch wildlife.

What If There’s No Aurora?

It is impossible to predict if an aurora will occur on a particular night.
So you should treat it as a bonus if you see one. However, there are a lot of other things to do here if an aurora does not appear.
